The British Isles

The British Isles consist of two main islands: Great Britain and Ireland and a great number of Small Islands along the coasts. The total area is about 94250 square miles (244000 square km.). The full name of the country(with over 5 million small Islands) is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The British Isles are separated from the European Continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea/

The Seas surrounding the British Isles are shallow. The shallowness is in some ways an advantage. Shallow water and is …. Their deep water and helps to keep the shores from extreme cold. It is too, the home millions of fish and more than a million tons are caught every year. The coastline is much broken.

Northern Inland occupies one third (1/3) of the island of Ireland. It borders on the Irish Republic in the south.

There are no night mountains in G.B.. in the north the Cheviots (the Cheviot Hills) separate England from Scotland the Pennines stretch down north England almost along its middle? The the Cambrian Mountains occupy the great part of Wales and the Highlands of Scotland are the tallest of the British mountains. Ben, Nevis is the highest peak of the Highlands.

Most of the rivers flow into the North Sea. The Thames is the longest river, then the Severn and the Clyde. The rivers of Britain are of no great value as waterways and only few of them are navigable for small vessels.

The warm currents in the Atlantic Ocean influence the climate of G.B. Winter is not cold and summer is not hot. G.B. is not rich in mineral resources. It has some deposits of oil and gas that were discovered in the North Sea.

The population of the U.K. is almost 50mln people. The main nationalities are English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish.

The U.K. is a highly developed industrial country. The main industrial centers are Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow. London is the capital of the country and the biggest city.

The U.K. is a monarchy. The Queen is the head of the state, but her power is limited by Parliament. There are two Houses in Parliament: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Prime minister is the head of the Government and usually the leader of the party that has a majority in the House of Commons. Each new Prime Minister may make changers in size of his cabinet an may create new ministeries or make other changes.
