Part V. Speaking

1. Discussion

A. One day you meet a young man or woman. You begin talking and discover that the two of you have many opinions and ideas in common. You enjoy each other's company so much that you agree to meet for coffee the following day.

In the following weeks you meet many more times. As you get to know each other better, you begin to fall in love and talk about the

138

future. However, there is a serious problem. Your parents have told you that they expect you to date people from the same background (race, religion, education, or social class) as you. However, your new boyfriend / girlfriend comes from a very different back ground. You know that your parents will be angry if you decide to keep seeing this person.

You must make a decision. Will you continue seeing this person, knowing that your parents will disapprove, or will you end the relationship now, before it becomes more serious?

B. Discuss the following questions in small groups.

1.Have you ever had a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend who came from a different background than you? What was the difference? What did your parents say about this relationship?

2.Could you fall in love with/or marry a person from a different background than you? What would your parents say if you wanted to do this?

3.In your opinion, is it important for two people in a romantic relationship to be similar in race, nationality, religion, economic status, or educational level? Why or why not?

4.If two people come from different backgrounds, what problems might they have in their relationship?

5.What are the advantages of two people from different backgrounds getting married?

139

2. Interview

Work with a partner. Take turns interviewing each other about your experiences as "global citizens." Use the following questions; feel free to add others that interest you.

1.Do you enjoy traveling?

2.How many different countries have you visited?

3.How many languages do you speak?

4.What is the strangest food that you have ever eaten?

5.Do you use e-mail? Are you connected to the Internet?

6.Would you like to live or work in another country for several years? Which country?

7.Would you marry a person from another country? If so, what languages would you want your children to learn?

8.In your current or future work, how important is contact with the international community?

9.Right now you are studying English. Which other languages do you think you will need to learn in the future?

3. Reports

Prepare a short presentation about your typical day as an international citizen. Use expressions for generalizing in your presentation (E.g. generally, typically, normally, most of the time, usually, as a rule, ordinarily and etc.).

1. Use the questions to guide you. For example: Which imported products do you use every day?
