A)

Five years after King George V took over as the ruler of Great Britain First World War started, and tension grew between the peoples of Britain and Germany. In March 1917, the Imperial German Air Service bombarded the city of London. As King George V was a descendant (потомок) of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the use of German names could cause bitterness among the people of Britain. The royal family took on the new name – The House of Windsor – after the town of Windsor and Windsor Castle. After the death of King George V, his son, ascended to the throne as King Edward VIII. His reign lasted for only 326 days as he abdicated his throne (отрекся от престола) to marry Wallis Simpson, who had had two divorces, and both her husbands were still alive. Due to the abdication of King Edward VIII, his younger brother became King George VI on December 11, 1936. His struggles and eventual triumph over his speech impediment was the subject of the 2010 Academy Award-Winning movie – «The King's Speech». Upon his death in 1952, his eldest daughter Elizabeth became the constitutional monarch of the United Kingdom. Her eldest son Charles, Prince of Wales, is the heir to the throne.

The Brad Pitt family began with his childhood in the midwestern United States to becoming the most famous multicultural family today. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie both carry spectacular acting careers, model as loving parents, and share their enormous fortune with an array of international charities.

At home, three lovely adopted children, Maddox Chivan from Cambodia, Pax Thien from Vietnam, and Zahara Marley from Ethiopia, and three biological children, Shiloh Nouvel and twins Knox and Vivienne call the super couple mommy and daddy.

Angelina and Brad wish to raise their children with influence from different cultures in order to as Angelina stated in a recent interview, give them a mature outlook on the world.

Brad Pitt's siblings live a much quieter life, than their movie star brother, Doug Pitt, owns a computer repair business and sister, Julie Pitt Neal, is a homemaker.

The Donald Trump family, including the three eldest Donald Trump children, proudly takes its place in United States history as the true self made American royalty.

After Donald Trump's grandfather emigrated from Austria in the late 1890s, he realized the American dream and started a restaurant which allowed him to invest in real estate. Continuing this Trump family success, Frederich Trump over time built the Trump family empire, now called the Trump Organization

Now, as the fourth child of five in the Frederic Trump family, Donald Trump has expanded the operations of the Trump Organization to include casinos in Atlantic City and other entertainment vehicles. The Trump family name is its own brand. The home of the Trump family empire is in the Trump Tower located on 5th Avenue.

Marie Sklodowska and Pierre Curie, both prominent scientists, met and married in Paris in 1895. In 1903 they received the Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery of radioactivity. Not only their scientific partnership but also their marriage was a happy one. The Curies were also good, loving parents. They had two daughters, Irene and Eve.

After Pierre Curie tragically died in a street accident in Paris on 19 April 1906, Marie was in shock. She felt like half a person with Pierre gone, but she was strong and able to continue their work. In 1911 she was again awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Frédéric Joliot-Curie were also physicists involved in the study of radioactivity. They were awarded the Nobel prize for their work as well.

The Curies' other daughter, Ève, wrote a noted biography of her mother. Their granddaughter Hélène Langevin-Joliot is a professor of nuclear

physics at the University of Paris, and their grandson Pierre Joliot, who was named after Pierre Curie, is a noted biochemist.

Nikita Mikhalkov, perhaps the most internationally famous living Russian filmmaker and actor was born in Moscow into the distinguished, artistic Mikhalkov family. His great – grandfather was the imperial governor of Yaroslavl, whose mother was a Galitzine princess. Nikita's father, Sergei Mikhalkov, was best known as writer of children's literature, although he also wrote lyrics to his country's national anthem on three different occasions

spanning nearly 60 years – two different sets of lyrics used for the Soviet national anthem, and the current lyrics of the Russian national anthem. Mikhalkov's mother, poet Natalia Konchalovskaya, was the daughter of the avant-garde artist Pyotr Konchalovsky and granddaughter of another outstanding painter, Vasily Surikov. Nikita's older brother is a well-known filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky. Nikita Mikhalkov's first wife was a renowned Russian actress Anastasiya Vertinskaya. They had a son, Stepan Mikhalkov. With his second wife, Tatyana, he had a son and two daughters.

The Brontës [´brontei] were the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage (дом приходского священника) in Yorkshire, now the

Brontë Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861. Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre (1847), Emily's Wuthering Heights (1847), and Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. And both their father, Patrick Brontë, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. But fame came to them late, and this talented family all died young. In spite of the sadness of their lives, the Brontës have passed on their experience of beauty and passion. In their novels, you can breathe the atmosphere of the moors (вересковые пустоши) and feel the powerful personalities of these famous novelists.

The Kennedy family is a prominent family in American politics and government. The wealth, glamor, and photogenic quality of the family members, as well as their extensive and continuing involvement in public service, has elevated them to iconic status over the past half-century, with the Kennedys sometimes referred to as «America's Royal Family».

Soon after John F. Kennedy was elected President in November 1960, he and his younger brothers, Robert and Edward, all held prominent positions in the federal government. From 1947, when John became a member of Congress, to 2011, when Patrick Joseph Kennedy II departed Congress, there were 64 years with a Kennedy in elective office in Washington. This spans more than a quarter of the nation's existence

The family has suffered a series of tragedies, sometimes called «the Kennedy curse», including the assassination of brothers John and Robert, some scandal crime incidents (e.g. Chappaquiddick incident), and four airplane crashes (three of them fatal).

personality. For example the psychologists say that only children, like you, are spoilt by their parents and grandparents. As a result they can be quite selfish. Is that true?

Yes, I’m an only child, but I don’t think I was spoilt,… but maybe I was. I don’t consider myself to be selfish, but I’m probably not very good at seeing things from other people’s point of view.

5.– I didn't know that your brother had got married.

Yes, he and Helen, his wife, have been married for two years already. And they have a daughter, my little niece.

UNIT 3

I. Text.

Our University

Now let me tell you about my university – Far Eastern State Transportation University. I am really glad to study here. It is one of the best country's higher education institutions.

Our University is quite large and old. It was founded in 1937 as Khabarovsk Railway Engineering Institute. In those days the institute had only 3 faculties: the Mechanical, the Railway Engineering and the Operational faculties. Since that time the institute has undergone many structural changes and grown into a large modern institution of higher learning. In 1997 it received a university status.

The university is well known for its high standards of education and research. It trains competent and creative specialists for different branches of engineering, transportation and economy of our country.

Our university is a large school where about 15 thousand students study currently. Most of them are full-time students, like me; there are also many part-time students. Besides, there are many post-graduate students, who carry out research work and conduct classes or deliver lectures as well.

Every year about 5 thousand people get enrolled in the university. Young people who are interested in science and technology may enter the Institute of Traction and Rolling Stock, the Institute of Operation, Automation and Telecommunication, the Institute of Transport and Civil Engineering, the Power Engineering Institute, the Institute of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Air Communications. The Institute of Economics trains economists, accountants and other specialists in finance, management and commerce. The Humanitarian Faculty prepares specialists in social service, psychology, tourism management.

The course of training at the university lasts 4–6 years. The academic year is 9 months or 2 semesters of 4 and a half months each. Studies begin in September and end in June. Students take exams at the end of each semester. Twice a year students have vacations.

During the first two years the students study general engineering subjects, such as higher mathematics, physics, chemistry, basics of computer engineering, social sciences and the humanities. In the third year the students begin to take specialized courses. Great importance is given to practical training. Students work in well-equipped laboratories, workshops and computer centres of the university and in the fourth and fifth years they work at railway and industrial enterprises of the Khabarovsk Territory.

More than 600 highly-qualified professors and instructors work at 50 departments of the university. Teaching is only part of their activity, they are also involved in scientific work. Gifted students can take part in research activities under their tutors' guidance.

Our university covers a large territory. On the campus there are three buildings for classes, six hostels, sports facilities, residential houses for teachers, a cafeteria, a polyclinic for teachers and students, and a club house.

Higher education is not free now. Most of the students have to pay for their tuition. Those students, who pass their entrance examinations well, study free of charge.

It's very interesting to study at the university. You have a chance not only to get a higher education but also to make a lot of friends and develop your special talents and skills.
