Unit I: HOME

Why people need houses?

Think about the reasons why people need houses. Make a list of the reasons you consider to be the most important. Here are some prompts:

privacy;

comfort;

storage of possessions;

acquisition, storage and preparation of food;

shelter from the weather;

protection from insects and/or pests;

safety;

kinship, social gathering;

travel and movement.

Is this the same for all people in the world?

Can you identify places where these needs might be different?

House Types

Villa

The term “villa” originated in Roman times, when it was used to refer to a large house which one might retreat to in the country.

Today villa tends to suggest a free-standing comfortable sized house, on a large block, generally found in the suburbs.

A villa house will typically have an asymmetrical floor plan, where rooms open on to a central corridor.

Bungalow

The term “bungalow” is used to describe a medium to large sized free standing house on a generous block in the suburbs.

Abungalowisgenerallylessformalinitsfloorplanthanavilla.

Some rooms in a bungalow typically have doors which link them together.

4

Cottage

The term “cottage” is used to describe a small house.

Acottage maybe free-standing or attached to other cottages.

Atypicalcottagefloorplanhasfourmainrooms,twooneither side of a central corridor.

It is common to find a lean-to added to the back of the cottage which may accommodate the kitchen, laundry and bathroom.

It is common for a cottage to have a verandah across its front.

Terrace

A terrace is a two or three storey house that is generally connected to other two or three storey houses.

Terraces are generally found in inner city areas.

Townhouse

Atownhouse is a modern version of a terrace.

Mansion

A mansion is a very large house, usually of more than one storey, on a very large block of land or estate.

Courtyard Home

A courtyard home is a house with a floor plan shaped around one or more courtyards.

Unit

Aunit is a very small house, generally part of a series of single storey attached units.

Maisonette

A maisonette is a large unit, which is usually attached to another.

Duplex

“Duplex” is the modern term used to describe a maisonette.

Flat

Aflat is a small unit in a series of attached small units.

Aflat is usually part of a multi-levelled building.

Aflat typically has two or three rooms which open on to each other or a central living area.

5

Apartment

An apartment is similar in size to a unit and is attached to a series of other units in a multi-storey building.

An apartment is typically open planned.

Semi-detached

•Asemi-detached house is a house, which is partly attached to another.

MostBritishpeopleobtaintheirhomeinoneofthreeways.The majority, about two-thirds, buy their own houses or flats. About 10 per cent of the population live in flats or houses which theу rent privately from another person or organization.

Themajorityoftheremaining25percentliveinaccommodation that is owned by, and rented from their local council. Council houses (or flats), as these are called, are available to everyone, but

6

in many areas there are long waiting lists, and the homes go to the most needy people. In the past few years it has become possible for council house tenants to buy their property from the local authority at a fairly cheap price – this is determined by taking into account how much rent the person has paid to the council over the years.

Homes in Britain are relatively expensive, although prices vary from area to area. They are most expensive in the London area and cheapest in northern England, parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

American apartments are usually described as one-bedroom (studio apartments), two-bedroom or three-bedroom apartments. Twoand three-bedroom apartments usually have a connecting living-room; frequently they have two bathrooms. Virtually all apartments have built-in closets with doors, which are used instead of wardrobes.The walls are often painted rather than wallpapered. The entrance generally is directly into the living room area; halls are rarely in evidence. Floors are generally covered with wall-to-wall carpeting. Apartment buildings usually have laundry facilities on the ground floor. Almost all apartments have refrigerators, most people now use microwave ovens which provide very convenient and fast cooking.

There are two types of apartments: a rented apartment and a condominium, which an individual owns rather than rents.

In addition there are town-houses which are joint houses or apartments in a compact planned group in a town.Town-houses can be purchased or rented. Rented apartments can range from

8

a few hundred to thousands of dollars per month. The purchase price of condominiums and town-houses can range from thirty thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the US the historical preference since the 1950’s has been for people to purchase their own houses in the suburbs rather than incentralareasofthecities.Privatehousesarethemostexpensive. Real estate firms advertise lands, houses and apartments and provide a market for buyers and sellers.The cost of private houses has escalated sharply in recent years and consequently people buy town-houses and condominiums which generally are cheaper.

A mobile home is the cheapest form of housing that can be purchased. Mobile homes can be moved from place to place by trucks. Mobile homes are located in special mobile home parks, which are sometimes called mobile villages. They are usually on the outskirts of cities. Retired people and young people with low income reside in mobile homes which can be purchased or rented.
