Как и Хорни, Роджерс считает, что значительная дистанция между реальным и

идеальным Я - тревожный симптом, признак дизадаптации и пониженного самоуважения. Ряд исследований показал, что между "реальным" и "идеальным" Я существуют более сложные отношения. Katz, Zigler & Zalk (1975) продемонстрировали, что расхождение между реальным и идеальным Я является (в соответствии с теорией Пиаже) мерой "взрослости" ребенка, его способности использовать опосредованные, символические действия и вербальные паттерны, и что это расхождение с годами растет. Leahy & Huard (1976) обнаружили связь между разрывом реальное-идеальное Я и способностью ребенка принимать роль другого, таким образом подтвердив концепцию Дж.Мида и теорию морального развития Кольберга (Kohlberg).
