slotters were used for cuttingkeyways, machining thesquare holes in such parts as dogclutches and they are still used for this work in small shops.

The work table is usually circular and provided with T-slots forclamping the work. It ismounted on two horizontalslides at right angles to each other and can be moved with either hand orintermittent automaticfeed in either direction along them. It can alsobe rotated in the horizontal plane about itsaxis in either direction by hand or automatically.

Slotters are usually provided with three or four speeds, obtained either by cone pulley orgear-box.
