1. Mr Smith woke up suddenly, “What time is it?” he wondered. He looked at his clock. It was seven- thirty. “I can still make it to my class on time” he thought. “It doesn’t begin until eight-thirty. I’ve never late.”

He got up quickly, brushed his teeth and shaved. Then he got dressed, put some lecture notes into his briefcase and ran down the stairs.

When he went out the front door, the bus was just coming around the corner. He jumped on. Mr Smith sat down beside a young man in red and white sweater. The young man had a textbook in American history.

• “We’ve met before, haven’t we?” asked the student.

• “Yes we have,” said Mr Smith, “In American history class”.

• “Did you hear the lecture in that class yesterday?” asked the student.

• Mr Smith was a little surprised. “Yes, I did.” he said.

• “What did the prof talk about?” the student asked.

• “You were there, weren’t you?” asked Mr Smith.

• “Yes, I was.” Said the student. “But I slept right through the class. Don’t you ever sleep through an eight-thirty class?”

• No, I don’t. said Mr Smith. “At least not that one. You see, I gave the lecture.”

2. John was going to leave the psychiatric hospital at last. His treatment had been long and painful. The doctors hoped he had recovered at last. Bu to be quite sure they decided to give him the final test. Doctor Cracker was the first to speak:

- “I’ll tell you a story and you will tell me what’s wrong with it. Last Sunday a motorcyclist crushed into a bus and was knocked off. A tram was passing by and cut off his head. A fellow picked up the motorcyclist’s head and put it in the place with the help of some plaster. The motorcyclist thanked him and invited the man to the cinema.”

- “It’s nonsense,” said the patient. “It was Sunday all drugstores were closed, so the man couldn’t buy any plaster.”
