Classification of Organisation Cultures

Prof. С. Handy suggests that we can classify organisations into a broad range of four cultures. The formation of 'culture' will depend upon a whole host of factors including company history, ownership, organisation structure, technology, critical business incidents and environment, etc.

1. Power Cultures

In these cultures self-reliant and highly competitive self-development provides the basis of relations. A manager's success is related to their charisma and influence, rather than to their knowledge and experience. The style of the chief executive is the model for other managers. In organisations of this type managers need to be tough-minded and aggressive.

2. Role Cultures

In these cultures a manager's role is completely related to their place within a centralised system. Their success depends on how well they adhere to rules, procedures, and precedents. Individualism and aggression are not valued in these cultures. Employees in these organisations should not exceed the limits of their roles.

3. Task Cultures

In organisations of this type they value everything that makes it possible 'to get the work done'. The main concern in these organisations is with successful completion of their projects. A manager's success is related to their knowledge and experience required to achieve tasks, rather than to meet the requirements of their role.

4. Individual Cultures

In organisations of this type freedom of expression is valued the most. Effectiveness of any activity in these organisations is rated by how much the activity satisfies the staff, rather than by how well it conforms to business plans. Independence, creativity, and experiment are also valued in these organisations.

The Partnership

Partnerships are voluntary combinations of from 2 to 20 persons formed for the purpose of carrying on business with a view of profit. This type of organisation represents a logical development from the one-person business since the obvious method by which such a firm may acquire further capital is to form a partnership. The motive, however, may not be financial and partnerships are often formed in order to bring new ability and enterprise into the business.

The partners usually share in the task of running the business, but a partner need not play an active role. A person who joins a partnership, supplying capital and sharing in the profits, but taking no part in the management is known as a dormant or sleeping partner. Partnerships are a common form of business organisation in such professions as law, accountancy, surveying, and medicine.

The advantages of this type of firm are similar to those of the one-person business. It is a flexible organisation which allows a greater degree of specialisation than the one-person business. Partners usually specialise in one or more aspects of the business; one may be responsible for buying, one for selling, one for production, and so on. Since it has greater access to capital, it can achieve greater size than the sole proprietor.

The great disadvantage, like that of the one-person business, is the fact that the liability of the partners is unlimited and they are all fully liable for the acts of the other partners. There are, however, some limited partnerships which have to be registered with the Registrar of Companies.
