TEXT: BUILDING MATERIALS

All building materials are divided into three groups:

  1. Main building materials such as stone, timber and metals.

  2. Binding materials such as lime, gypsum and cements.

  3. Secondary materials which are used for interior parts of the building.

Stone, clay, sand, lime and timber are called natural building materials. Cement and concrete are examples of artificial building materials. As to their qualities building materials should be durable, strong, water-resistant, acid-resistant and heat-resistant. Some of them should also have pleasant appearance.

Timber is the oldest structural material. It is light, cheap and easy to work with. But timber has certain disadvantages: it burns and decays. Although timber of sufficient thickness can withstand fire for a long period. Nowadays there are special chemical treatments which make timber resistant against rot and fire.

Concrete is one of the most important building materials. The basic materials for making concrete are cement, aggregate and water. Concrete can be plain and reinforced. Plain concrete is used for almost all building purposes. Reinforced concrete is a combination of two of the strongest structural materials: concrete and steel. Reinforced concrete is used in bridges and arches, for structures under water, foundations, columns, beams. The first reinforced concrete skyscraper in the world was built in 1902-03 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Another widespread modern building material is plastic. It has small weight, high strength, durability, water-resistance, thermal resistance and non-conductivity. Plastics are not subjected to corrosion, may be transparent and are easy to glue. You may soften and press them. They are liable to fire. However, modern technologies provide them with necessary fire-resistant properties.

As for the metals, steel, cast iron and aluminium are the most widely used materials in building. Aluminium can be used as the final covering to a roof because it resists fire penetration and surface spread of flame.

Today a lot of fire resistant materials are being developed in the laboratories to improve fire protection of buildings. Different companies all over the world produce fire proofing paints, slabs, fibres and fire-resistant articles such as doors, shutters, partitions.
