52. When are Democratic and Republican Conventions usually held?

Both of them are held every 4 years.

The primary goal of Democratic National Convention (since 1832) is to nominate and confirm a candidate for President and Vice President, adopt a comprehensive party platform and unify the party. Delegates form all 50 States and from American dependencies and territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands attend the convention and cast their votes to choose the Party`s presidential candidate. Like the Republican National Convention, the Democratic National Convention marks the formal end of the primary election period and the start of the general election season.

The stated purpose of the Republican National Convention (since 1856) is also to nominate an official candidate in an upcoming presidential election.It adopts the partly platform and rules for the election cycle as well.

53. Who chairs the House of Representatives?

Each state receives representation in the House in proportion to its population but is entitled to at least one representative. The most populous state, California, currently has 53 representatives. The total number of voting representatives is fixed by law at 435. Each representative serves for a two-year term.

The constitution sets three qualification’s for representatives. Each representative must 1)be at least 25 years old 2)have been a citizen of the USA for the past 7 years 3)be (at the time of election) an inhabitant of the state he represent. House is not allowed to require additional qualifications but it can be the judge of the qualifications of its own members.

Elections for representatives are held every even-numbered year, on Election Day the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

The party with a majority of seats in the House is known as the majority party. The next-largest party is the minority party. The Speaker and some other officials are generally from the majority party. The Constitution does not specify the duties and powers of the Speaker, which are instead regulated by the rules and customs of the House. The Speaker is the second in the line of presidential succession behind the Vice President. Each party elects a floor leader, who is known as the Majority Leader and the Minority Leader. The Minority leader heads his\her party in the House, and the Majority leader is his\her party`s second –highest ranking official behind the Speaker. Each party also elects a whip, who works to ensure that the party`s members vote as the party leadership directs.

54. What is the most northern of the Great Lakes?

The Great Lakes are a collection of freshwater lakes located in the northeastern North America, on the Canada – United States border. Consisting of lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth comprising 21% of the world`s surface fresh water. The lakes are sometimes referred to as the North Coast or «Third coast» by some citizens of the USA.

Lake Superior is the most northern one. It is bounded to the north by the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of Minnesota, and to the south by the US states of Wisconsin and Michigan. The lake has a surface area of 31,700 square miles, which is approximately the size of South Carolina. It is fed by over 200 rivers (the Nipigon river, the St. Louis river, the Pigeon river and others) and drains into Lake Huron by the St. Mary`s river. The largest island on the Lake Superior is Isle Royale in the state of Michigan, other large famous islands include Madeline Island, Michipicoten Island and Grand Island. The largest cities on Lake Superior are: Duluth, Thunder Bay, Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie. Among the scenic places on the lake are: the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Isle Royale National Park, Grand Island National Recreation, Pukaskwa National Park. Lake Superior has been an important link in the Great Lakes Waterway, providing a route for the transportation of manufactured and mined materials. It is a habitat for approximately 80 species of fish.
