There are now 61 cities in the UK: 49 in England, five in Scotland, four in Wales and three in Northern Ireland. City status is a» mark of distinction granted by the personal Command of the Sovereign, on the advice of his or her Ministers..The largest cities in the UK with the population exceeding 1 mil­lion people are London (7,074,265) and Birmingham (1,020,589).
