The tree structures 1-8 are all ill formed. That is, there is no combination of phrase structure rules or transformations that will generate any of them. Study the trees and answer the question.

For each tree, state what the problem is (i.e., why it cannot be generated by the phrase structure rules) and correct it when possible without altering the linear order of any of the nodes. A list of some of the phrase structure rules for English is given in appendix 5 . You may find it helpful to review Linguistics, pp. 201-206.
