It is the pilot’s responsibility to determine the service required for his particular flight, and controllers will make all reasonable endeavours to provide the requested service.
HOW DO I ASK FOR A PARTICULAR SERVICE?
SteertonApproach, G-ABCD, Request *Basic/Traffic/Deconfliction/
Procedural Service.
G-ABCD, Steerton Approach, Pass your message.
G-ABCD, Cessna 172, From Notwood to Welcoombe, 5 miles North West of Steerton, Altitude 2500 feet, Southwold 1008, VFR.
G-CD, No Known Traffic, *Basic/Traffic/Deconfliction/Procedural
Service.
*Basic/Traffic/Deconfliction/Procedural Service, G-CD.
Unless you are qualified to fly in
IMC, you should
accept a Traffic, Deconfliction or Procedural Service only in conditions where compliance with the radar controller’s advice will permit your flight to continue in VMC.
A Basic Service does not give a pilot any advice
or headings to fly in order to avoid conflicting traffic.
*The pilot requests the service he requires, this is read back by the Air Traffic Unit, the pilot confirms that he understands that he is receiving a particular service, by repeating this in his acknowledgement message.

VFR FLIGHT SCENARIO.
The following imaginary scenario depicts an aircraft on a VFR cross-country flight from Lambton to Snedbury. The scenario is typical of a VFR flight in the United
Kingdom, outside regulated airspace. The scenario is included here to illustrate some of the points that have been made in this chapter about VFR flying in the
United Kingdom.
The scenario begins with the aircraft on the ground at Lambton, a busy civil airfield with a full air traffic control service. The RT dialogue starts at the point where the pilot is ready to start the engine. Lambton does not have an ATIS.

*As this flight scenario takes place in UK air space - atmospheric pressure is reported in
MILLIBARS, unless it is greater than 1000, when the unit will be omitted from transmissions entirely.

At some airfields, a pilot may be instructed to change frequency after take off, while, at others, local procedures may dictate when the pilot changes frequency. In this example, the pilot is instructed to change to Lambton Approach soon after takeoff, even though he has not reached the control zone boundary. Note also that the approach controller instructs the pilot to report when certain conditions are met. For example, he tells the pilot to report reaching 1500 feet. It is important that the pilot should report promptly when reaching that altitude, because the controller may be waiting for this confirmation before issuing instructions to another aircraft.
