It is someone who likes and respects you. She tells you the truth and if it hurts she helps you with it. A good friend takes care of you. A friend has good communication skills and a great sense of humor. When you are happy, sad, mad, and embarrassed you go to him.

Good friends stand by you and help you. They understand your decisions, even if they don't agree, and try to help with life's problems. Friends are there to help with life, not to make life harder. They don‘t get on my nerves.

A good friend is someone who you can trust, and who trusts you. A good friend is always there for you and sees your importance equal to theirs. She/He is not afraid to tell you if you're wrong about something. A friend is someone who you look up to. You have a lot in common with him or her.

Friends are people whom you can trust, have fun with, and be comfortable with. They enjoy your company, make you laugh, make you happy when you are around them. They don‘t have arguments with you.

Socrates (c.469 / 470 BC –399 BC) was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher. He is one of the founders of Western philosophy.

A True Friend

One day one young man comes to the great philosopher Socrates and says, "Do you want to know something about your friend?".

"Hold on a minute," Socrates answers. "Before you tell me pass a little test. It is called the Three Filter Test."

"Three filter test?".

"That is right," Socrates continues. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it is a good idea to filter what you say. The first filter is Truth. Are you sure that what you want to tell me about my friend is true?"

"No," the man says, "actually I am not sure that it is true...".

22

"All right," says Socrates. "So you don't know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter. Is it something good or bad?" The man says, ―Mm… It is not so good.‖

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not sure that it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one more filter: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concludes Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why do you want to tell it to me at all?"

Discuss the following questions.

1.Why does a young man come to Socrates?

2.Why does Socrates stop him?

3.What is a three filter test?

a)The first filter question:_________________________________

b)The second filter question:_______________________________

c)The third filter question:_________________________________

Writing: Informal letter

Informal letters need to be well organized. Use paragraphs to organize letter.A letter of 100 words can easily be organized into three paragraphs.

Paragraph 1 - the introduction. When we are replying to a letter we usually say something about what was in the original letter.

Paragraph 2 – the body - the main content.

23

Paragraph 3 - the conclusion which usually ends with something like 'Write back soon'.

The letter below has no paragraphs. How can you organize the sentences into paragraphs?

Dear Mikel

It was nice to hear from you.

Of course I will help you with your school project! You want to know about a typical morning.

Well, on days when I go to college I usually get up about 7.00 o'clock. My mum always asks me to sit down and have breakfast before I leave. Unfortunately, I don't have much time and I eat breakfast at college.

I go to college by bus.

It takes about 30 minutes but sometimes it's longer if there's a lot of traffic. As soon as I arrive I meet my friends and get the latest news.

Anyway, give my love to your family. Write back soon.

Best wishes

Steve

Now read the letter with paragraphs and check yourself.

8.Listen and check. Reading: A typical British family

9.Look at the title of the text and say what a typical British family is like, then read the text and check your predictions.

A typical British family

A typical British family consists of mother, father and two children, but now family life changes. For example, the number of divorces increases. In fact, every fifth marriage ends in divorce. This means that there are a lot of one-parent families.

The majority of divorced people marry again, and they sometimes take responsibility for a second family.

Members of a family – grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins – keep in touch, but they see less of each other nowadays. This is because people often move away from their home town to work, and so the family breaks up.

Relationships within the family are different now. Parents treat their children more as equals, and children have more freedom to make decisions.

Although the family holiday is still an important part of family life (usually takes place in August) many children have holidays away from their parents, often with a school party or other organized group.

10.Are the following statements true (T) or false (F)? Correct the false ones.

a)There are many changes in typical British family.

b)Changes in society don‘t influence the British family.

c)In fact one marriage in every five ends in divorce.

d)Most divorced people remarry.

e)Family members see each other less nowadays.
