The family of Мг. Banks lived in Number Seventeen Cherry Тгее Lane.

There were four children in the family:

Jane who was the eldest, Michael who сате next and John and ВагЬага who were twins. Mrs. Banks needed а nurse for her children. Магу Poppins was their nurse.

She was ап old-fashioned woman with shiny black hair, small Ыие eyes. She was thin with large feet and hands.

Every second Thursday was her day out. She was free from 1till 6 o'clock in the afternoon.

Tha t day was the second Thursday. And she put оп her white gloves and took her umbrella with а beautiful handle in the form о! а parrot's head. Mary always took her umbrella. It was not raining that day. The weather was cold.

She went to the Match Man who had two professions: if it

was wet he sold matches; if it was fine he was оп his knees аН day, making pictures in coloured chalks оп the side-walks.

Оп that day it was fine but cold.

The Match Man drew beautiful pictures and invited Mary Poppins to look at them.

One picture was very nice. It was the country- аН trees and grass and а little bit of bluesea in the distance. The Match Man was holding Mary's hands and drew her out of the street into the very middle

of the picture. And they found themselves right inside the picture. They were nicely dressed, they had changed! They moved оп together and found а green table for Afternoon-Tea. There was а pile of rasp- berry-jam-cakes and hot tea оп the table.

They drank tea with pleasure and then went to the Merry-go-Round. They had nice time together. It was nearly dark when they сате back. They knew the mistery of the picture and smiled at one another...
