Homework (for the 26th of May)

YouTube steals my life!

Actually, I cannot say that there is something I got used to binge do, but it is known that almost all of us are affected by something getting us suck into. In my case, such a thing is binge watching videos on YouTube.

Sometimes it happens that I am getting lost in viewing lots of content on YouTube. And not that it is always a useful one. For example, I can spend hours watching funny jokes about pets or other animals. Sure enough, the content like this is completely uplifting, but sadly it steals much time and has no more use for me than making me smile.

But not only humorous videos drag me out of reality. There are moments when I realise I am wasting my time reviewing some fragments from different movies or cartoons that are just about nice CGI effects or little, but, of course, way too touching or full of deep sense, dialogs between main characters. As in the previous case, such a content also evokes a huge range of emotions, but at the same time it is actually useless. You know, there would be so much time to spend on some things that are to be done necessary – like learning something new or practicing any kind of skills (playing music, for instance).

Another aspect of binge watching YouTube videos is about type of content that just seems to be useful but in fact it is not. For me such a content is about math. Well, yes, the science has never been less useful than swimming skills, but binge watching about it has the reverse side. As the same science says, our brain is able to maintain the attention on exact information flow for ten and up to twenty minutes in a row. Average duration of any math video, that has more or less serious content, is about fifteen minutes or so. And it would not be so bad if there were only one or two such videos to be seen. But in reality, I can spend two or three hours viewing this kind of content and overload my brain so I can no more analyze what is going on the screen. And, as a result, major amount of information, that should have been useful, just go through me like I have never got it. And this phenomenon is not only about math or any other "useful" information, but it is about any information that I get while binge watching YouTube.

Nevertheless, it is not only about viewing useless content, I mean specifically watching the videos. How much time I spend just scrolling the list of distinguishing clips in order to find something that, as I hope it to be, is interesting and might be useful! Well, from time to time I manage to somehow find a clip that is going to have a real use for me, but I cannot say that it happens this way as often, as I would like it to do so. Not that it takes the same big amount of time as watching videos does, but even five or, god forbid, ten (sometimes more) minutes fly away and you do not even understand they flew away.

Unfortunately, such a waste of time really affects my life. Just imagine, what I could have done if I had stopped immediately, and I get down to bad mood. It is like a drug that you gain satisfaction from, but the next hour you realise the life is mercilessly wasted. Moreover, binge starring at the computer monitor has a bad effect on my eyes, so by the end of the day I feel like these two round, red from the blood, guys on both sides of the nose cry in pain. And what is terrifying indeed that all of my organism gets weaker due to the fact that I am sitting on my chair and do no exercises. And the last but not least – binge watching YouTube breaks my psyche by making me obsessive with it. That is one of the worst things that could ever happen to anyone. Feeling that you are wasting your only life, that is not, by the way, endless, ruins you inside and there is nothing left except one thing: emptiness.

However, I am not that type of person believing that now my best years are ongoing (because, in my opinion, the whole life is your best years), but I agree that now is not the time that should be wasted on watching foolish content that has no sense at all, but it is time to make all your efforts to grow mentally and physically as well. So I think it is not YouTube that is guilty of your wasted time but you are yourself. So I am now trying to fill my life with diverse activities, like reading books, playing games, watching USEFUL content YouTube (and not only here) that will HELP me DEVELOP, walking outside, and, that I must not forget about, – studying.
