Aviation in the Future
Towards the end of the century, a new generation of civil aircraft will be in operation, and a greatly expanded and diversified8 airline market will be served. It is predicted that total passenger miles flown per year may be three or more times the current traffic.
Air transportation will continue to be economical, environmentally acceptable and socially beneficial. An element in future aeronautics, which will contribute to fuel economy, noise reduction, congestion relief, and safety, will be a new approach to operations. Some of the techniques include steep, curved approaches; reduced separation distance; fewer holds in flight and on the ground; and improved allweather operations.
Short-haul aircraft will be particularly benefitted by operational improvements because they spend so large a portion of their time operating near the terminal.
Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft of the future will combine vertical ascent9 and descent capability with more efficient horizontal flight than is possible with today’s helicopters.
Perhaps the greatest air transport growth in the future will occur in the air freight field. The projected demand growth, the large size and weight of some of the anticipated cargo units, the handling considerations, and the advantages of scale all suggest the eventual development of very large air vehicles.
The hypersonic transport can be envisioned as a follow-on or perhaps even an alternative to supersonic flight. Operating at three times the speed of Concorde – or about eight times the speed of today’s jet transports – and capable of very long ranges, the hypersonic transport could be of interest in an era of increased East-West trade.
The aeroplane, however, is powered not only by a conventional turbojet or turbofan engine, but by a supersonic combustion ram-jet integrated into the structure. Because of the speeds, the structure must be cooled by circulating liquid in the skin.

Aviation Maintenance Jobs
Jet engines are pretty cool. And fortunately for job seekers, they require constant maintenance. Aviation maintenance jobs are available in the private, commercial, and military sectors. Most of these jobs require at least vocational or college training plus certification in specific areas such as avionics, airframe, or powerplant mechanics. If you want to break into this side of the aviation industry then it pays to have formal training and certifications.
Most successful aviation mechanics are certified in airframe and powerplant mechanics (otherwise known as an A&P) and also have years of on-the-job experience. To get an edge over the competition, avionics certification is recommended. Avionics is the future of all aviation, including general aviation, and experts expect the job market to reflect that need for many years into the future. When an employer knows that you are capable of working on avionics as well as engines, you become more valuable to them because they may not need to hire a separate people for both tasks. This streamlines the process and lowers their costs.
Aviation maintenance jobs are available at smaller repair facilities as well as at large airline companies. You can also find work as an A&P in the federal or state government and at corporations that own or lease aircraft. In addition to the need for maintenance of fixed wing aircraft, helicopter mechanics are also needed.
