When a Canadian student completes Grade 12, he or she receives a high school diploma. This gives the graduate the right to apply for a program at a university, college, or technical school. These schools offer what is called post-secondary education.

The high school graduate may also decide to look for a job. Acceptance at a post-secondary institution depends on the grades achieved in the final year of high school. The following are the four main types of post-secondary institutions in Canada.

University is an institution which offers general programs in arts and sciences, as well as study for the professions. Graduates may receive a bachelor's degree (BA), master's degree (MA), or doctorate (PhD) depending on the length of study and the program.

College is an institution which offers only the bachelor's level of study or the first two years of a bachelor's degree with the right to transfer to a university to complete the program.

Community College is an institution which offers a variety of programs to the community including two-year diploma programs that lead to employment in a particular field, shorter programs leading to certification in a particular area, and general interest courses.

Technical school is an institution which offers programs in the trades and technical areas. Technical schools also usually have apprenticeship programs.

41

Tuition varies across Canada, but in all cases is highly subsidized by the government. Students pay for their own books, supplies, and living expenses. Sometimes parents pay for some of their children's higher education, but often, the students work during school vacations to pay their expenses or take out a student loan. The loans must be paid back after the students have graduated.

The school year is generally eight months long, from September to the end of April, and the year is usually divided into two semesters of four months each. Then, most students try to get summer jobs to save money for the winter courses.

Many Canadians are believers in lifelong learning. They continue to take courses to learn and adapt to a quickly changing world. Many people, for example, are taking computer courses.
