.pdfautomobile. Over years their efforts have given people the gasoline engine, the electric starter, tubeless tires, fuel-injected engines and anti-lock brakes. These are only a few innovations. What is next?
There are already a number of modern vehicles which are not yet in common use, but which may become a usual means of transport in the future. One of these is a small electric car. Imagine, we go out into the street, find an empty car, get into it, drive to our destination, get out and leave the car for the next person. In fact, there may be no need to drive these cars. With an automatic guidance system for cars being developed, it will be possible for us select our destination as today we select a telephone number, and our car will move automatically to the address we want.
For long journeys in private cars one can also use an automatic guidance system. Arriving at the motorway, a driver will select the lane he wishes to use. Then he switches over to automatic driving and relaxes while the car is doing the work for him.
Not long ago, the only electronic thing on most automobiles was the radio. But at present sophisticated electronics is playing a big part in current automotive research. For example, Ford cars are equipped with an electronic instrument panel that will calculate how far one can drive on the fuel left in the tank. Radar may control the brakes to collisions, and a display screen may show the car's position on the road. Having summed up the information about the speed and distance of various objects ahead, the computer detects all possible dangers and gives special light or sound signals. The green light on the panel indicates that the system is on. The yellow light warns of stationary objects ahead. The red demands to slow down the speed. Another red light and sound signal make the driver apply the brakes.

– sixteen и т.д.
Порядковые числительные (за исключением первых трѐх: first, second, third) образуются от соответствующих количественных числительных с помощью суффикса – th и перед порядковым числительным ставится определѐнный артикль:4-й – the fourth,5-й – the fifth,7-й – the seventh.
hundreds of books |
two hundred books |
thousands of books |
five thousand books |
millions of people |
2 million people |
4-36-08 – four three six o [ou] eight
1900 – nineteen hundred, in (the year) nineteen hundred,
2000 – two thousand, in (the year) two thousand.
April 12, 2015:
24
on the twelfth of April, two thousand ten или on April the twelfth, twenty ten.

0.1 – 0[ou] point one |
1/4 – a (one) quarter |
2.45 – two point four five |
2/3 – two thirds |
1.5 – one and a half |
2% - two per cent.

Transport of Tomorrow
For a few years now some of the most advanced new automobiles have been equipped with instrument panels that can "speak". In a polite female voice, the device will report on engine oil pressure, parking-brake and headlight operation, seat belt connection, and other different functions. The driver can even program the Voice Warning System to announce the time or to give a low-fuel warning for any tank level.
A Japanese company is designing a car of a new generation, which will have a lot of unusual characteristics. The car's four-wheel control system will ensure movement diagonally and even sideways, like a crab. This is especially important when leaving the car in parking places. To help the driver get information on the road the most important data will be projected on the screen. A tourist traveling in such a car will not lose his way even in Sahara: a navigation Earth satellite will indicate the route. A new ceramic engine has been developed in Japan. Many important parts as pistons, rings, and valves have been made of silicon materials. They are better than those of steel and withstand temperatures up to 1.000° С. Therefore, the engine does not need a cooling system.
Engineers are experimenting with a new system that enables drivers to see better after dark. This 'night vision' system uses sensors that can detect a human figure at night more than 1.600 feet away. That is five times the distance at which conventional headlights are effective. An image-processing system scans the information from the sensors, creating different images for different objects. The images are then displayed on a screen built-in a car's instrument panel. It is like

black-and-white photo of an object ahead. And the system is passive, which means no lights are needed to illuminate the object in front of the vehicle.
One of the latest applications of electronics is the wheel-computerized system. It does not only monitor air pressure in automobile tires but adjusts it automatically. This system in addition enables a driver to set tire pressure while seated.

During the Driving Test
The driving test is your chance to show that you can drive safely. You will be asked to locate the vehicle's headlight switch, windshield wipers, and emergency flashes. You must demonstrate how to use the parking brake and also wear your seat belt. During the test, you must use the vehicle's turn signal lights. The examiner will ask you to back up in a straight line and may ask you to turn the vehicle around on a narrow two-way street, or park on a hill.
During the driving test, the examiner will note:
•How you start your vehicle. When leaving the curb, do you use your mirrors and turn your head and look back for passing cars? Do you signal, and wait until it is safe before entering traffic?
•How you control your vehicle. Do you use the gas pedal, brake, steering wheel, and other controls correctly?
•How you drive in traffic. Do you use the proper lane? Do you signal, change lanes carefully, and follow other vehicles at a safe distance? Do you signal the proper distance before turning? Is your turn too wide or too sharp?
•How you stop. Do you stop smoothly and at the right spot? Can you stop quickly and safely in an emergency?
•How you back up. Do you look over your right shoulder while backing?
Do you have complete control of the car?
•How you change your speed to suit the number and speed of cars nearby, the people crossing the street, road conditions, weather, the amount of light, and the distance you can see ahead.
•How you judge distance. Do you stay a safe distance away from other cars when following or passing? Do you stay a safe distance away from people walking or riding on the road?
•How you respect the rights of others. Are you courteous to other drivers
and pedestrians?
A driving test may be required as part of any driver license examination.
