European Mountain Ash

A most admired, showy ornamental tree that is easy to grow and super hardy. It grows about 20-25 feet tall with beautiful, lacy, fern-like foliage. In late spring the tree is admired with lovely white flowers. From mid-summer until late fall, bright orange-red berry clusters create a colorful show. The tree has graceful, upright form.

At the end of our garden, beside the pool, stands a mountain ash about forty feet tall. We used to try to keep it low by repeated cutting back, but it was all in vain: its slender branches shot up so rapidly that in short time it got back to its former height. So now it just goes its upright way.

The winter aspect of this tree is very impressive. In that season the smooth dark brown bark with the branches heavily covered with snow makes a beautiful picture. Though the branches are slender we have never known them to snap under the weight of snow, and storms have never broken one of them.

The buds are among the first to foretell spring by their early swelling. When the tree blooms in May it is covered with a loam of white. At this time visitors to the garden are surprised when they learn it is a mountain ash. They seem never to have realized the beauty of the blossoming tree.

But the mountain ash is at its loveliest in August, when the tree is loaded with heavy drooping clusters of orange berries.

Against a bright blue sky it is a gorgeous effect, indeed. But soon the birds come and strip it clean in a few hours, for they know the exact time when the berries are ripe.

FLOWERS

Flowers are a great treasure. They are delightful to look at because they have so many shapes and colors, and most of them have pleasant scent. It is mild in the tulip, overpowering in the jasmine, elusive in the violet, captivating in the carnation.

Flowers grow everywhere. There are flowers for all seasons and all places – flowers for spring, summer, autumn and winter. There are flowers of the fields and woods and hedgerows, of the seashore and the lake’s margin, of the mountain-side up to the very edge of the eternal snow.

Flowers are arranged and combined in different ways. They can be made into bouquets, garlands, wreaths, bunches and so on. Let us have a look at some of the flowers.

Daisy and Iris

The daisy is a small wild and garden flower. It has a yellow centre and white petals. The flower opens its eye to the day or when the day dawns. It opens widest when the sun is at its height and shuts when the sun goes down.

The iris is an ornamental plant remarkable for its handsome delicately-scented flowers and sword-shaped leaves. The iris and the daisy differ in this that the daisy opens widest when the sun shines brightly, and shuts altogether when the sun goes down; while the iris opens widest in darkness and closes when the sun shines full upon it.

It is worth while mentioning, too, that when the iris roots are dried, powdered and distilled it has the smell of violets.

STINGING AND PRICKLY PLANTS

Many plants have scent glands (scented geraniums, sweet herbs, etc.), and they easily give out scent when slightly pressed; the nettle as readily gives out its poison which the sharp hairs insert into the skin of the person touching it.

In Java, also, is found the Daoun Setan, or “Devil’s Leaf”. This plant is believed to cause pain lasting several hours and even death. There is also in India a nettle which stings so fiercely that it should be avoided at all times, for the pain from its poison is intense and sometimes it is said to produce symptoms like lockjaw.

In some cases a plant hair is converted into a kind of defensive weapon, as in the thorns of roses.

Different cactus plants possess remarkable prickles. Some of these prickles grow in tufts, and each one is extremely sharp-pointed. If you touch them your finger is instantly injured with a whole sheaf of them, and you are confronted with a difficulty of extracting them.

Thistles and many other plants of the same family have a hairy pappus attached to their seeds. This enables them to be carried by the wind, to some distance. They are sometimes carried to a considerable height, and the air is full of them; in fact, it seems to swarm with glittering, falling bodies, like a meteor shower.

ENVIRONMENTALLY COOL

Turning down the thermostat is one of the least efficient, most environmentally demanding ways to cool things off when it is as hot as a blast furnace outside.

As communities lower indoor temperatures in summer, power plants must maximize their output, which leads to the burning of polluting fuels. There is a better way. Instead of switching on air conditioner, try lowering the temperature with some of these simpler, nonmechanical approaches.

Plant deciduous shade trees or trellis-climbing vines around your home to block the sun without expending energy.

Building porches and garages on the sides of your house will also help turn back an invasion of solar heat.

A roof or pergola covering a patio or section of driveway cuts down the amount of heat reflected into a house.

Use only light-colored roofing materials because they will redirect heat than absorb it.

Early maintenance

For the first year or two, especially after a week or so of especially hot or dry weather, watch your trees closely for signs of moisture stress. If you see leaf wilting or hard, caked soil, water the trees well and slowly enough so the water soaks in rather than runs off. This will encourage deep root growth. Keep the area under the trees mulched and free of other plants. Until the trees are deeply rooted grasses and other plants may take up moisture before the trees can get their share.

Пояснения к тексту:

output – производительность, мощность, отдача; продукция deciduous – листопадный

Orchards and kitchen gardens would be planted further away from the home and paths with walls or hedges flanking them. Later, as the middle class implemented their English garden influence, the style became a more relaxed form of garden design. The removal of some of the boundaries and hedges and working the garden into the natural landscape became the foundation of the English garden we know today.
