A profession doesn’t determines a man’s life.
Culturology is comparatively a young branch of humanitarian knowledge.
There is no use to save historical monuments -- sooner or later the time
will ruin them.
One of the issues of the present is to form a new world order, free from terrorism and wars.
Doing pottery or clay-modeling, or vine-breading students acquire not only
skills in making art objects but also get a deeper insight into the nature of arts.
Many countries nowadays strive to overcome national identity and unite with the world community.

of the italicized words
\
The exhibition “ The Russian Folk “ is a systemized presentation of folk sources and a roots of present-day Russian culture. They are the traditional peasant b dwelling with its furniture and house utensils, the national c cuisine and clothing the ways and traditions of life and the creation of the people’s mind and imagination. They are exotic for a foreigner whereas for a Russian they are his cultural and historical heritage.
Is it possible to see the traditional d rites, as they were in present-day life? In Russia it is hardly so. However, they have been preserved in Russian colonies abroad. The natural flow of Russia’s life was forcibly broken e at the outset of the 20th century, so that the national evolution of the nation was stopped short. One of the f consequences of this is that presently you will not see the traditional Russian folk way of life and folk culture in their complete whole. The best you can find is some fragment of folk culture in society and museum exhibitions of cultural artifacts. The Russian people have to restore the natural growth of their society and its traditional roots. Much of the spiritual and material heritage is bound g to outdate and outlive. Life itself will make the final choice of what should be brought back and what should stay in the past where it belongs.
But we have h to delve into the past in order to see and feel the real traditional background of Russian life. It is both a i far-off and not so distant past when folk culture was a living and full-blooded process, with the national traditions carefully observed and passed on from generation to generation .
The historical roots of Russian culture have formed the design of this exhibition. The authors are not so much trying to recount what has remained of the national traditions in modern society, as to give an insight into the classical forms of the folk ways of life and the characteristic j peculiarities of folk culture, which took centuries k to shape. A considerable number of
l articles of the exhibition are distinguished for their m striking national originality. Among them are works of a purely ethnographic interest, characteristic of certain aspects of the material culture of the Russian people.
Among the objects of this collection intended as decorative furnishing of the interior are
n the items executed in various techniques. The exponents of the collection have been repeatedly displayed at exhibitions of applied arts abroad. Having seen the exponents, the visitor will see for himself which of the described phenomena are still alive and developing today. This exposition might also help you understand the Russian’s soul and mentality, virtues and weaknesses. Much of the modern Russians’ character has been determined by their historical background, which is a combination of the people’s material and spiritual heritage or their national traditions. Although, for the most part, the Russian people are unaware of them, the traditional life-style continues to affect their lives and behaviors.
The exhibition’s items coming from many regions of Russia is a vivid manifestation of the talent,o exquisite taste and skills of the Russian peasants; the collection may be called a source of inspiration for many generations of artists and spectators alike. The exposition is
intended for a wide range of visitors. It might be a helpful and useful guide for foreigners, who are either going to visit or are visiting Russia for the15first time. It will also satisfy the p inquisitive mind of those who want to know more about the numerous cultures of the world.

Roerich and get acquainted with an example of such activity
Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947), also known as Nikolai Konstantinovich Rerikh was a Russian mystic, painter, philosopher, scientist, writer, traveler, and public figure. He created thousands of paintings (many of them are exhibited in well-known museums of the world) and about 30 literary works. Roerich was an author and initiator of an international pact for the protection of artistic and academic institutions and historical sites and a founder of an international movement for the defence of culture. Roerich earned several nominations for the Nobel Prize.
In 1929, Roerich in collaboration with doctor of international law from Paris University G.G. Chklaver prepared a draft of an agreement dedicated to protection of cultural values (Roerich’s Pact). Coupled with the Pact Roerich proposed a distinctive sign for identification of protected objects – Banner of Peace which was a white cloth containing a red ring and three red circles inscribed in it. The sign symbolized a unity of the past, present and future into the ring of eternity .
Banner of Peace on the painting “Pax cultura”. 1931
The paragraphs of the Pact run as follows:
cultural values, despite of their ownership, are cultural heritage of all humanity;
they shall have unconditioned protection and respect in time of war;
treasures of culture cease to enjoy the privileges stated in the treaty only in case they are made use of for military purposes;
treasures of culture shall be protected both during international and local armed conflict;
treasures of culture shall be protected in time of peace;
treasures of culture shall be registered and added to the list in order to be protected in time of war and in peace;
in order to identify treasures of culture to be protected in time of
war and peace a distinctive and compulsory symbol shall be used, that is Banner of Peace;
to protect foreign cultural treasures national instruments shall be used.
18
Roerich’s Pact has large educational value. “A pact for protection of cultural treasures is not Only needed as an official body, but as an educational law that, from the very first school days, will educate the young generation with noble ideas of preservation of the whole mankind’s true values”, – wrote N. Roerich. Roerich’s Pact became the first international act especially devoted to protection of cultural values. It was a unique agreement in this field, which was accepted by a part of international community before the second World War. The idea of the Pact was welcomed by R. Rolland, B. Shaw, R. Tagore, A. Einstein,
T. Mann, H. Wells.
The Pact was signed in the White House in Washington, on April 15, 1935 with the participation of US President F. Roosevelt.
Originally, the document was ratified by 21 countries of the American continent. Later the Pact was validated by 15 countries more. In a few years after the war, Roerich’s Pact played an important role in forming of international law standards and public activity in the field of protection of cultural heritage.

29.Get acquainted with the abstracts from the UNESCO World Heritage Site *
to develop your own project. Pay attention to the ‘Election criteria’ section.
Of-course, you’ve recognized these historical sites. They are protected and maintained by the International World Heritage Program which is administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee
A White House conference in 1965 called for a "World Heritage Trust" to preserve "the world's superb natural and scenic areas and historic sites for the present
and the future of the entire world citizenry." A single text was agreed on by all parties, and the "Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural
Heritage was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972.
19
The World Heritage Sites are places that are significant culturally and naturally; they
vary in type but include forests, lakes, monuments, buildings and cities. World Heritage Sites can also be a combination of both cultural and natural areas. Today the World
Heritage Committee is the main group responsible for establishing which sites will be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Committee meets once a year and consists of representatives from 21 State Parties that are elected for six year terms by the World Heritage Center’s General Assembly.
Nominating process
The World Heritage Centre offers advice and help in preparing the Nomination File. At this point, the file is evaluated by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and the World Conservation Union. These bodies then make their recommendations to the World Heritage Committee. The Committee meets once per year to determine whether or not to inscribe each nominated property on the World Heritage List, and sometimes defers the decision to request more information from the states. There are ten selection criteria - a site must meet at least one of them to be included on the list.
Election criteria
Nominated sites must be of "outstanding universal value" and meet at least one of the ten criteria:
§I. "to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius";
§II. "to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or
within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design";
§III. "to bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared";
§IV. "to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or
technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates a significant stage in human history";
§ V. "to be an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land-use, or sea-use which is representative of a culture (or cultures), or human interaction with the environment especially when it has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change";
§ VI. "to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. (The Committee considers that this criterion should preferably be used in conjunction with other criteria.)
